What to bring
“If we can develop the ability to be aware of the present moment, we can use the past as a guide for ordering our actions in the future, so that we may attain our goal.” – SN Goenka
Bedding
- Bed sheets twin size: top, bottom and a pillowcase. Please, help us reduce post-course laundry load by bringing your own linens.
- Each bed has one pillow, one comforter, and one blanket. Please bring a blanket of your own if you need extra.
- Heated accommodation (with showers and bathroom) is provided. From September to May North Fork can be very cold at night, occasionally below freezing.
Meditation
- We provide a large base mat and cushions for every student to use in the Dhamma Hall and Pagoda only. If you wish to meditate in your room at allowed times, please bring your own meditation cushion.
- You are welcome to bring your own cushions or blanket if you wish to use them.
Clothing
- Modest dress is required for both men and women.
- Please bring an adequate supply of modest, loose and comfortable clothing, without distracting images and words, which covers the body from over the shoulders to below the knees, even when sitting. These guidelines allow other students to focus on their meditation more easily. Facilities for hand washing clothes are provided.
- Please don’t bring distracting clothing. Tight, transparent, revealing or otherwise striking clothing, such as shorts, short skirts, tights, leggings, tank, low-cut or skimpy tops, should not be worn at the center.
- In Spring and Fall, each day’s temperature can range from warm (60- 75 degrees F) to cold (35- 50 degrees F).
- Summers are hot during the day and cool and night. We recommend lightweight cotton clothing and a sun hat.
- Winters are rainy and cold. Bring jackets, sweaters or shawls, hats, gloves, and rain gear (boots, umbrella, raincoat).
- Only minimal hand-washing facilities are available.
- Bring comfortable walking shoes for walking on uneven gravel paths.
- Indoor footwear/slippers.
